Allied Air Cargo Aircraft, a Boeing 727-200 with registration 5NBJN operating from Lagos to Accra overshot the runway on landing at 7:10pm.

Ten people, including a female, are reported dead in a fatal plane crash Saturday in Accra. Allied Air Cargo Aircraft, a Boeing 727-200 with registration 5NBJN operating from Lagos to Accra overshot the runway on landing at 7:10pm and went through the airport perimeter fence before hitting a Daewoo taxi cab with registration GR 4642 – 12 which had a female passenger on board. The DHV III cargo plane, then finally, run over a 207 mini-van on the Giffard Road (Elwak-Burma Camp).  Ten passengers including a female on board the vehicle did not survive the incident.

Their bodies have been deposited at the 37 Military Hospital, a local hospital near the accident scene.

The cargo, according to authorities of the Ghana Airports Company Limited, had no dangerous goods on board.

The crew of four people on board the aircraft all survived the accident and are currently receiving treatment at the airport clinic.

The cause of the incident was immediately not known but some aviation experts believe the incident was as a result of aquaplane.

According to Wikipedia, Aquaplaning or hydroplaning by the tires of a road vehicle, aircraft or roller coaster occurs when a layer of water builds between the wheels of the vehicle and the road surface, leading to a loss of traction that prevents the vehicle from responding to control inputs. If it occurs to all wheels simultaneously, the vehicle becomes, in effect, an uncontrolled sled.

Wreckage of the 207 mini van in which the ten passengers were on board.

The government has since set up a five-member committee headed by Captain Alex Grant Sam to establish the cause of the plane crash including the extent of the damage. They have thirty days to present their findings.

Emergency teams including the Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Armed Forces, NADMO, Ghana Police, National Security, Ghana Civil Aviation Authority and the Ghana Airports Company Limited are currently on site.

Meanwhile, operations at the airport are normal and all flights are operating on schedule.
